Industry News » Your new responsibilities under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005

11-10-2006

DID YOU KNOW...

In the 12 months to 30th September 2005, there were 35,700 fires in commercial premises (including schools).

This equated to 20 deaths and 2,000 injuries.

The HSE estimates that 70% of businesses who suffer a fire cease trading!

The Association of British Insurers paid out £790 million in commercial fire claims in 2005, a 60% increase on the previous year and business interruption claims were at the highest since 1997, at £220 million.

Failure to adhere to the new reforms could result in a £5,000 fine or 5 years imprisonment.

On October 1st 2006, new rules under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 came into force, affecting all non-domestic premises in England and Wales. The changes mean that businesses are responsible for taking care of fire safety themselves.

Under the new regulations you are required to undertake:

  • A fire risk assessment, identifying all possible dangers and risks,
  • Remove or reduce any risks found as far as is reasonably possible,
  • Provide protection if flammable or explosive materials are used or stored,
  • Create a plan to deal with any emergency.
  • Regularly review your findings to make sure all new situations are covered,
  • Fire certificates are no longer required or valid from 1st October 2006.

The SG World Fire Safety Risk Assessment CD Rom will provide you with all the necessary guidance and best practise to ensure that you comply with the new regulations.  For more information click here.
